Plain, symmetrical buildings of brick and sandstone, with small-paned windows and shallow roofs, made the colonial town. Governor Macquarie and the convict architect Francis Greenway gave it its first fine public buildings around 1820. In the 1830s and 1840s John Verge built Regency villas at Potts Point, Mortimer Lewis gave the courthouse a Greek temple front, and Edward Blore drew a castellated Gothic house in London for the governor.
