Brick: elevations

Sydney’s clay made bricks from the first years of the colony, and convicts fired them for Macquarie’s public buildings. Brick was left bare on barracks, warehouses and terraces, covered with stucco on villas and arcades, and laid in red with terracotta when the Queen Anne style arrived in the 1880s. These buildings sit alongside the sandstone city, and many use its stone for footings and trim.
